c-zero-1The Citroën C-Zero is a fully electric car which is designed from the start to be electric. The car has a range of 80 miles and a top speed of 80 mph. The car is presented to the public on 8th of June 2010.

Known model

It could be that the model looks familiar. The car is the result of an cooperation between MMC (Mitsubishi Motor Corporation) and PSA Peugeot Citroën. The Citroën C-Zero is almost identical to the Mitsubishi i MiEV. Citroën C-Zero has the same drivetrain, electric motor and batteries as the Mitsubishi i MiEV. The differences can be found in the interior and the backside of the car (lights). Later in the year the car will also be available in Europe under the name of Peugot IOn.

Engine and Batteries

The car has an electric engine of 47 kW (64 bhp) with a torque of 180 Nm. It uses a constant transmission (6,066:1). The battery pack consists of 10 modules Lithium-Ion (8-cell type) and Lithium-Ion 2 modules (4-cell type). A total of 88 cells in series. The total weight of the battery pack is 528 lbs. The batteries have a total storage capacity of 16 kWh at a voltage of 330V. The battery modules are cooled by air through the air (max. 140 o F) and are integrated into the bottom of the car. The large battery pack is used for electric, air conditioning and heating. There is also a small 12V battery used for the onboard computer and breaking pomp. An inverter converts the 330V -> 12V AC / DC.

Charging

The car can be charged via a normal socket connection (3kW, 16A, 230V). Charging a completely discharged battery pack lasts over 6 hours. It is also possible for the car to charge via a quick charger (43 kVA, 125A, 400V). With a fast charger it is possible to charge the battery pack 80% full in 30 minutes. Both charging systems have a separate connector.

Energy Usage

A fully charged battery with a capacity of 16 kWh provides a range of 80 miles. Therefor the consumption is 200 Wh / mile. The average US residential retail price for electricity in 2010 is $0.11 / kWh. The price per mile is 0,200 kWh x $0.11 = $0.022 or 2.2 dollar-cent per mile. A full battery load will cost you 16 kWh x $0.11 = $1.76. With these full batteries you have a range of 80 miles.

The Citroën C-Zero is designed as an Urban EV, it has a 80 mile radius which is sufficient to cover 90% of normal daily car usage. An EV has also generally much lower maintenance costs compared with a car which uses a fuel engine. Citroën advises an car maintenance check every 9400 miles or once every year.

The Citroen C-Zero is a city car very compact and comfortable to drive, silent and non-polluting. The guaranteed autonomy is a bit limited, no more than 130 km. You can recharge the car at a common household outlet (in about six hours) or at a public column(in about thirty minutes). The electric motor has a power of 49 kw and the car has a battery pack with a capacity of 14 kWh. The seats guaranteed are four, however, the purchase price is a bit too high (more than 30,000 dollars).
